The “summer slide” of lost learning for some students over the summer is now well documented and while there are many programs throughout Forsyth County, Clemmons students who may benefit from a summer learning immersion did not have a nearby option.
With the help of Women Who Care Fund and the Wayne A. Shore Fund, the Jerry Long YMCA launched its first Summer Learning Academy, a summer camp of fun and learning at Ward Elementary School for students recommended by school educators. A class of nearly 50 students spent the morning in academic learning, including a STEM focus, and the afternoon in summer camp participating in outdoor and pool activities. One parent’s note…
“I wanted to let you know that I am really appreciative and grateful for the Summer Learning program hosted by the YMCA at Ward. My son enjoyed learning and going to the camp daily. He told me I did a great job picking the camp. He learned educational things and how to swim!!! Anyway, thank you all for your support on the classroom and in life.”
